Traveling Photography: Packing

For me packing light is a challenge because I keep all my camera stuff in one giant bag, so when I fly I almost always end up checking a bag. ($$$$)

B&H Photo and Video has published a page outlining four tips for photographers to travel light.

Plan trip with research.
Consider things like weather; who will be going with you; what exactly are you shooting; can you leave behind lenses (dead weight)?

Have a small day bag.
Self explanatory; find a bag that you need that won't carry too much. B&H suggests traveling with a mirrorless camera to shed weight. Consider things that you need, i.e. water, computer, lenses, etc. This is my greatest weaknesses, especially hiking.

Primes or zooms?
You can substitute. One zoom lens should substitute two or three prime (fixed) lenses, but you give up faster speeds.

Reduce extra accessories.
Use up as little space as possible. If you have screw-on filters, put them on the lenses and slide them in a pocket later. Don't bring large filters—you can always use Lightroom. Bring a Gorillapod.
